Support for New Mothers

Sometimes motherhood isn’t quite what you expect it to be. Emotions can become tender, nerves become frayed, relationships can change, and a part of you can feel like it is unraveling. If you are a new mother that feels this way, you are not alone.

A Postpartum Support Group is starting up in Albuquerque at Inspired Birth and Families. It will run each Wednesday from 10am-12am and is being facilitated by Licensed Mental Health Counselor Sara Bergert, who is also a former birth and postpartum doula.

Sliding Scale fee $10-$20.  Contact Sara at 505-377-9813 for more details and to RSVP

Happy Spring!

Spring is a time for rebirth and renewal! Take a cue from all of the seedlings sprouting up around you and give yourself a little time to stretch and grow creatively!

A Mandala is a wonderful way to do a Spring check in with yourself and your baby! First, draw a large circle on a piece of paper. Now, put your pencil down, and take three deep cleansing breathes in. Place your hands on your tummy and take some time to feel what your body and baby have to tell you today.

When you are ready, pick up your pencil and fill in the circle you made on your paper. You might want to think of the circle as your womb, and let it be filled with the thoughts and feelings that arise within you as you connect with yourself and your baby.

Take time to look over your drawing, consider what it has to say you and what you might have to say back!

A Plea for Self Care

Life is busy…there is just no getting around it! But the busier we get the more important it is that we stop and take care of ourselves! As mothers it can be easy to overlook or avoid taking a few minutes for your self each day. You might even consider it selfish!  But just the opposite is true. By making an effort to take care of yourself, you’re actually providing yourself with the tools to take better care of your partner, children (and baby to be!).

So what does this mean for you?  It means picking up that book you’ve been dying to read for the past few months, sitting down in a comfy chair and allowing yourself to read.  Or it might mean asking your partner to watch the kids for an hour while you take a bath. Make space for whatever it is that allows you to unwind at the end of the day. You’ll be glad you did!

Positive Birth Stories

Birth is a powerfully transforming and creative process that women’s bodies are not only equipped for, but made for! It is easy to begin to doubt one’s own life giving capacity when you are constantly surround with scary stories about the dangers of birth and what could go wrong. Television shows and news articles can quickly convince you that giving birth is hazardous to your health if not down right dangerous…but the truth of the matter is far different!

I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by women who shared positive birth stories with me as I grew up. I came believe that birth is a beautiful process from which women can emerge strong and proud. (As a doula the mothers I work with have shown me this time and time again!) Fortunately I am not the only one who has collected such stories over time.

If you are pregnant or are considering becoming pregnant, do yourself a favor and read a number of positive birth stories. Ina May Gaskin’s books; Spiritual Midwifery and Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth are filled with positive birth stories. Although not all of the births detailed ended as planned, each mother and couple that tells their story was able to grow from their experience and emerge happier, healthier individuals. I would highly recommend these great reads!

Do you have a positive birth story to tell? E-mail me at Danielle@BirthingBeginnings.com and I’ll post it for others to enjoy!
